What is Jaundice?
Jaundice is what makes your newborn look like a Simpson character. Almost half of the full term infants will develop jaundice. Jaundice is a yellowish pigmentation of the skin. They usually experience it during the first 2 weeks of life. It is temporary and harmless in most cases. It usually goes away on its own or with mild treatment.
What causes Jaundice?
High levels of a pigment in the blood called billirubin causes the yellowing of the skin. My daughter has had high levels of billirubin. This caused enough concern that the doctors had to put her under special lights and cover her eyes with a mask that made her look like zorro.

My youngest son had jaundice after birth. He went thru the whole incubator and mask thing. I was so afraid, at the time I didn't know it was common. It lasted a couple days while we were in the hospital then went away on it's own.
